Honest Burgers

I love a good burger.

Every time I’ve been to Honest Burgers, I’ve had a good one – they are consistently great in quality and flavour. I tend to go for the Honest Burger (beef, red onion relish, smoked bacon, cheddar, pickles and lettuce) with a gluten-free bun, and I haven’t been disappointed yet. Their specials are often exciting, too, but I’m not a fussy person when it comes to a burger – I like them pretty simple.

The fries are crispy, and deliciously light, too.

Frescobaldi Winemaker’s Dinner

I absolutely love having my wine paired for me.

While I absolutely love wine, I admit I’m not very adventurous about straying away from my usual glass of dry white. So I was absolutely thrilled to be invited to Frescobaldi for their winemaker’s dinner – four courses paired with delicious Italian wines.

Frescobaldi is in the heart of Mayfair, slightly tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the city. There’s something quite romantic about the restaurant – it would be a wonderful place to go for a date!

The team at Frescobaldi went above and beyond with the gluten free substitutions to the menu for me, and I couldn’t have been happier or more grateful.

Our first course was carpaccio di branzino con ciliege – a delicious sea bass carpaccio dish with cherries. It was paired with an Attems Pinot Grigio Ramato, which was copper-coloured – which I didn’t know Pinot Grigio could be!

The sea bass dish was absolutely divine – the tart cherries went so perfectly with the flavour of the fish.

While the others tucked into courgette ravioli with veal ragu, I totally lucked out with my gluten free option of lobster pasta.  The pasta had a lovely texture, and the sauce was perfection – I was a very happy camper (and got a few envious glances from the other diners, too!) Served with the Attems Cicinis, a Sauvignon Blanc, it was my favourite course of the evening.

For the next course, we switched over to red – the 2012 Luce, which went beautifully with carre d’agnello con purea di piselli e patate dauphinoise – lamb rack with pea puree and dauphinoise potatoes.

Every single course was so delicious, and all the wines were, too. While the others tucked into their semifreddo with melon, I had an amazing gluten free chocolate cake – served with the final wine of the evening, the Attems Picolit.

The courses were beautifully presented and delicious – the service was faultless, and the descriptions behind the history of the different wines fascinating. For £80 a head, I think the quality of the food, as well as the wine (I had about seven glasses that night in total!) the Frescobaldi Winemaker’s Dinner is such great value, and a wonderful way to spend an evening. I can’t wait for the next one!

The Urban Kitchen x Sticky Bundits Unite! With The Tabl

My favourite part about food blogging isn’t actually the food at all – it’s the people. I’ve met such amazing and wonderful people as a result, a lovely and unexpected side-effect of taking photos of food and writing about it.

Some of these folks include the team from the Tabl, where you can find out about the latest supperclubs, and who do such a great job of uniting the foodie community in London (their Community Founders event was pretty legendary); Toral from The Urban Kitchen, who I’ve met from various food events round town, as well as the team at Sticky Bundits.

They invited me, and a few other foodies, down to Toral’s amazing flat for a little get-together earlier this month.

Toral is a Cancer nutrition expert, and a cancer survivor. Her work with The Urban Kitchen focuses around delicious and healthy food – and having salivated over pictures of her delicious meals over on her Instagram for MONTHS I was SO excited to try out some of her amazing dishes!

The first salad was an Asian-pickled vegetable salad with smoked trout and Thai basil. Toral is around Borough Market most days, so all of her ingredients are so fresh, and I just loved the blend of delicious Asian flavours in this.

She also served up an edamame, mushroom, peanut and kaffir lime leaf salad – again, so delicious – the peanut and mushroom gave it a creaminess that went so well with the other fresh flavours in this dish.

This event was my first meeting the lovely Chris from Sticky Bundits, but after tasting his food it definitely won’t be the last! Sticky Bundits specialise in gourmet sushi burgers, and these were absolutely out of this world. I am an absolute rice fiend, so this is my idea of heaven – and I loved the combination of flavours, as well as the use of authentic Japanese ingredients in these burgers!

For my main, I went for the Boom Cha – a Vietnamese marinated pork burger with slow cooked pork belly and Asian chutney in between delicious rice buns. It tasted even better than it looks, and was wonderful, although I think next time I’m going to go for the other one I sampled – the Okonomiyummy.

This burger really brought me back to my childhood, when my mom would make me okonomiyaki on the weekends. In this burger, the Japanese marinated chicken thighs is served with okonomiyaki sauce, kewpie mayo and pickles – insanely good.

You can catch the bundits around Lower Marsh Market, but it’s worth giving them a follow to see where they’re at – I definitely recommend it!

It was such a wonderful event with great people, and there are some more fantastic events on the Tabl, so make sure you keep an eye out for the next one!

Crepeaffaire, Islington

Over Christmas this year, my eight-year old sister asked me what the best thing about being an adult was. Without a hesitation, my answer was being able to eat ice cream whenever I want.

I also think having a Nutella, cream and ice-cream laden crepe for dinner would probably come pretty close, too.

I really like the alleyways and side streets near Angel Station – there are some great little shops and cafes tucked away, almost like a village in the centre of London.

Down one of these little streets is Crepeaffaire, a creperie with a new gluten free crepe on offer.

Crepeaffaire

Their gluten free offering is made with buckwheat flour, and you can get almost the same sweet and savoury toppings as you get on the regular crepes.

My friend, a proper adult, went for the savoury option – she opted for the Le Goat Deluxe, which was filled with goat’s cheese, cheddar, onion confit, spinach, and red onion.

CrepeaffaireCrepeaffaire

I, on the other hand, went full five-year old, with the ‘I’ll Have What She’s Having’: strawberries, cream, Nutella, with ice cream on the side.

CrepeaffaireCrepeaffaireCrepeaffaire

The buckwheat crepe has a slightly nutty flavour to it, but is light and soft – just as a good crepe should be.

Crepeaffaire

I really enjoyed my Crepeaffaire experience, and would definitely recommend it for crepe lovers!

Celia at Smiths

I love beer.

Celia at Smiths - Gluten Free BeerCelia at Smiths - Gluten Free Beer

So much so that I had my 22nd birthday at a bierkeller, so we could all enjoy steins of the stuff.

Since I’ve gone gluten-free, I find I don’t really miss bread – and I’ve never liked cake, anyway – but I’ve really missed having a nice cold beer, especially in hot weather.

So it was perfect timing, really, as the weather last week was absolutely glorious – perfect beer ‘n’ burger weather. I was super excited when the team at Celia’s invited me down to Smiths of Smithfield, for a Coeliac Awareness Week event to try some of their product.

It was really interesting to find out that unlike most gluten-free beers, Celia is a true pilsner, made in the Czech Republic. It’s been deglutenised, and is naturally carbonated, unlike many beers, so you don’t get that heavy, bloated feeling you usually get.

It is really delicious, and a perfect accompaniment to the gluten free burgers at Smiths. The lager tasted really clean, while the burger did not – it was absolutely filthy, like a proper burger should be.

We also got to try Celia Dark, which is also gluten-free –  I personally prefer the lager, but this would be perfect for gluten-free Guinness fans!

All in all, I had a wonderful evening sampling beer (who wouldn’t?) Thanks to the Celia team for having me!
